“Immanuel Prayer Hall” consecrated in the year 1936 was the
corollary to the efforts of a group of residents of Muttahara
for the establishment of a place of worship through Mr. K.
Thomas Pothen, Catechist, Christ Church, in 1932. The outstation
is located close to the seashore. The 40 ft. x 20 ft. building,
completed in 1934, came up on 1 acre and 30 cents of land,
granted by the Chairman, City Mission, Trivandrum. The
construction was well supported by Rev. M.G. Chandy, Vicar,
Christ Church, Mr. Baker Fenn, Mr. Eapen Ittiavarah, Professor of
Law College, Trivandrum and K.Thomas Pothen, Catechist.
Rev. C.K. Jacob, Archdeacon, who was installed as the Bishop of
Madhya Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India later, had
baptized seventy-five residents of the locality after the
consecration of the Church. The Archdeacon exhorted the
believers on the occasion with Eph. 2:19, “You are no longer
foreigners and aliens but fellow citizens with God’s people and
members of God’s household”.
An orphanage with 18 children from Manacadu and Muttathara was
launched in 1936 by Ms. Eliyamma Oommen in a small building with
3 rooms acquired for Rs. 253.00. The Mission House, Orphanage
and Nursery School are maintained through contributions from the
congregation and liberal assistance from Christ Church.
The
Church, renamed as “Immanuel C.S.I. Church”, celebrated its
Platinum Jubilee in 2007. Divine Worship is held at 8.30 a.m. on
Sundays. Holy Eucharist is celebrated on second Sundays. An
elected committee manages the affairs of the Church. Women’s
Fellowship, Youth Movement, Choir and Sunday School are vibrant.
The congregation has 47 families with 117 subscribing members.
In order to cater to the burgeoning community that worships at
the Church, the ancient structure has given way to a magnificent
building. The project has been taken up by CSI Christ Church,
Trivandrum, to commemorate its Sesquicentennial Celebrations.
Not to be outdone, the congregation at Muttathara adds their
mite to the effort. The consecration of the new Church is
scheduled for October/November 2011.
